E-shopping “greener than going to the shops”
Buying goods online is greener than a trip to the shops
Internet shopping is good for the environment. That was the claim made at the the second annual On Line Green Awards (OLGAs) in London, where delegates were told that the carbon emission of each item bought online and delivered to the customer is 132 grams of C02. Twenty-seven items need to be bought on a dedicated car journey to the shops to achieve the same level of efficiency.
The OLGAs, organised by IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group), celebrates green initiatives and through a variety of speeches, aims to inform attendees about environmental issues and to highlight how companies in the vanguard are meeting those challenges.
Even when taking a bus, nine purchases need to be made to be as green as shopping online.
More than 140 business leaders, academics and representatives of industry associations gathered together for the event on the Kensington Roof Gardens in London.
There were 28 nominations of both large and small companies across seven categories.
Celtic Sheepskin and Ocado collected the Small Retailer and Large Retailer Consumer Awards respectively, which were decided by more than 15,000 voters on MSN.
In the Panel Awards, decided by judges representing trade associations, industry and environmental groups, Arena Flowers and Dixons.co.uk won the Small Retailer and Large Retailer prizes. The Supply Award was claimed by the Home Delivery Network, and Kelkoo collected the Green Thinker Award.
E-Bay collected the Grand Prix prize. With 84 million sales worldwide every day, the organisers said the e-Bay business model of selling used goods could be seen as the ultimate in recycling.
Retailers that fail to consider the environmental impact of their business are likely to be left behind, James Roper, CEO of IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group), told the delegates.
