Sainsbury’s and Nectar launch iPhone apps
Nine out of ten customers want information via mobiles
Sainsbury’s and loyalty programme Nectar have launched two mobile apps after research indicated that 92% of its customers wanted information on their mobile phones.
The free apps are the first to be available from both the supermarket and the loyalty scheme for download from Apple’s app store, and are available on the iPhone and iPod Touch.
They let customers check their Nectar accounts, locate their nearest Sainsbury’s outlet, and alert the supermarket’s customers to in-store promotions.
Mike Coupe, Sainsbury’s group commercial director, commented: “Our customers are always looking for ways to save money and time, and the Sainsbury’s app will allow them to do just that.”
The Nectar app will also allow Sainsbury’s to suggest personalised promotions to customers based on the details in their Nectar profile. In addition to Sainsbury’s launch offers will be available from Nectar partners BP, Homebase and Hertz alongside selected offers from FMCGs.
Jan-Pieter Lips, MD of Nectar, said: “Shoppers can literally carry Nectar offers around in their pocket and collect them wherever they are. Exclusive, personalised offers are available to them at their fingertips.”
The Nectar research also found that 91% of respondents wanted to access information about their Nectar accounts on their phones, and 85% said a store finder app would be useful.
Tesco has recently launched its first transactional mobile app on Nokia’s Ovi platform while Asda is also planning a transactional mobile service.
