Starwood points are ‘most valuable’
Hotel tops ranking table
Starwood’s Preferred Guest programme has come top of a list ranking reward programs that provide the best dollar value per point, compiled by website NextAdvisor.
The Preferred Guest scheme rewards hotel guests for stays at Starwood-owned outlets such as W Hotels, Sheraton, Westin, Le Meridien and St Regis. The company offered a value of $0.021 per point when redeemed for a hotel stay.
This beat competing programs quite comfortably, according to the ratings. In second place in the list was American Airlines AAdvantage ($0.010 per point), followed by Marriott ($0.008), and Hilton HHonors ($0.005 per point).
To calculate the cash value of the programs, NextAdvisor compared the cost of a night’s stay in summer and fall in major US cities to the number of points required using each of the US-based programs, repeating the calculation with flights to determine the value of frequent flyer points.
The best value airline for collecting points overall was Southwest, whose Rapid Rewards scheme offered points worth $0.017, followed by Starwood Preferred Guest ($0.012) and United Mielage Plus ($0.011).
